Gochisou-sama ごちそうさま
The phrases ”Itadaki-masu” and ”Gochisou-sama” are spoken respectively before and after every meal as an expression of appreciation.
More recently Gochisou is used to describe a feast or a nice meal, but originally ”Chisou” meant to run around or scramble in order to prepare food and treat one’s guest with a sincere spirit. The guest in turn appreciates all the effort and thoughtfulness of the host as well as the food itself. The word has evolved to Gochisou-sama and is spoken after each meal to show our appreciation for everyone’s effort and for the food itself.
